Information Vectors

This section introduces an important term for the context of this document: the information vector. I will start with a simple definition:

An information vector is an encapsulated sensory perception defined by characteristics that are interpreted by the observer.

The “information” component of the term implies that these environmental things represent meaningful data to an observer. The “vector” term indicates that these things are defined by more than one property or value.

To give it a little more context, here is a list of things that represent information vectors in the human world:

  • The image of a black sphere
  • The image of an eight ball
  • The image of a billiard table
  • The sound of a car horn
  • The sound of one note from a piano
  • The sound of three-note chord on a piano
  • The sound of a symphony
  • The feel of a tap on one’s shoulder
  • The image of a red octagon
  • The image of the letter “S”
  • The image of the word “STOP”
  • The image of a stop sign
  • The smell of burning wood

The wording in the list above is subtle but deliberate. For example, image of the black sphere is the information vector, not the black sphere itself. Anyone who could define the image as a black sphere has knowledge of those concepts (“black” and “sphere”). Information vectors and concepts are two related but different things. That point will be addressed in much more detail.
